Below the advisor we will show you ...

1. Fitness tracker: Why is a good display so important?
Simple fitness trackers for less than 50 euros usually have only a small LC display, which displays little information. For indoor sports, this may be enough, but who carries the fitness tracker the whole day and during sports activities outside, should pay attention to a solid display. It is important that it can be read in sunlight and is large enough when you operate the tracker about it.

By the way, many cheap fitness trackers only show the number of completed steps besides the time of day. Everything else you can only read and evaluate on the computer and not immediately during or shortly after the sport. The top products inform you better on the go. A table with the best fitness trackers we've tested can be found at the end of the article.

2. When a fitness tracker should have a GPS sensor
Almost all smartphones today have a GPS sensor, with fitness trackers, this feature is only found on more expensive models. The GPS function is exciting for all athletes who regularly cover many kilometers - whether jogging or cycling. The fitness tracker can then log the exact route via GPS and also record the time and speed required. If you want to increase your condition over time and follow it closely, you should not miss out on the GPS function.

To count only the daily steps, a GPS tracker is not necessary. Sensitive sensors in the fitness tracker perceive the movement and can deduce the exact steps from it.

3. Fitness tracker with heart rate monitor / heart rate monitor
More and more fitness trackers can now measure the pulse. In the past, an additional chest strap was often needed to measure the pulse. Now, thanks to sensors, many fitness trackers work without them. This is very comfortable, especially for beginners. Fitness trackers with heart rate monitors vibrate or give an acoustic signal as soon as a preset pulse is exceeded or undershot. This is useful, for example, in interval training, but also in the normal jogging for beginners who have no breath sooner. They are not expensive: Many good heart rate monitors are available for less than 100 euros, such as the Garmin Vivosmart 3.

Incidentally, there is only a difference between heart rate and heart rate in the narrower medical sense - fitness trackers use the terms synonymously.

4. Battery life of the fitness bracelet
The good news in advance: With the battery life of a smartphone, the stamina of fitness tracker batteries has nothing in common. Because fitness trackers are made to last many days before they need to be recharged. The battery should last at least 7 days without any problems, the Garmin Vivoactive HR even manages 12 days. Incidentally, GPS reception and smart notification functions consume the most power - turning off these features may increase battery life.

The TomTom Spark 3 Cardio + Music tracker does not tire until after 20 days and the Garmin Vivofit 3 even lasts for a whole year - however, it does not offer smartwatch functions and has a replaceable battery.

5. Evaluation of the results via app or web app
What good is the whole collected data if I can not evaluate it? Most manufacturers offer their own apps and websites that athletes can easily use to transfer and analyze the data. However, the functionality is very different and just smaller brands offer only a few evaluation options. The combination of app and web app is ideal if the fitness tracker does not carry out any major evaluations: If the data initially reaches the smartphone, athletes can see first results directly after or even during the training. Of course, even faster is when the fitness trackers themselves make a first evaluation. But only a few can do that, for example the Garmin Vivoactive 3 .

With many trackers, you first have to transfer the data via smartphone to the cloud of the manufacturer - Internet connection is therefore a mandatory prerequisite for synchronization. Then you can compare your services and get statistics on the website of the manufacturer. Before you buy a fitness tracker, you can have a look at the scope by getting the free apps on your smartphone.

6. Tracker with sleep analysis - do I need this?
Necessary or not? In the sleep analysis, the ghosts are different. But it is clear: Who wears the fitness tracker 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, gets with the sleep analysis, a revealing feature with it. Self-optimizers and athletes receive interesting data on their sleep behavior and can, for example, harmonize training times. In addition, you can wake up from the fitness tracker by vibrating alarm in the morning. Some trackers are even aimed at the sleep phases, which should ensure a recovered wake-up.

7th duty: Tracker must be waterproof
Hardly any criterion is as important as this: The fitness tracker must be waterproof in any case, so you do not have to take it off immediately when showering or a shower. If you regularly swim or even dive, you have to take a closer look: Many fitness trackers are splash-proof, but they do not withstand the pressure under water. The Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro and the Garmin vivofit 3 , however, can withstand water depths of up to 50 meters. Good fitness trackers also measure the swimming movements and then record the number and time of the floated lanes or even recognize the swimming style (crawl, chest).

8. Do I need WiFi and Bluetooth?
In everyday life, the use of the fitness tracker should be quite simple - even the transmission of data. This happens on all current devices via Bluetooth on Android or iOS smartphones, often automatically in the background. A few trackers have a data cable for transmission to the PC, so that the synchronization can be done without a smartphone.

Mostly very expensive are Wi-Fi fit fitness trackers. These log into the domestic radio network and synchronize themselves virtually stand-alone with the cloud.
